Day 5 -May 19

Day 5

Mile 79.4

We definitely had a great campsite last night and both Rockhopper and I slept really really well. The lack of water yesterday and the fact that we hiked 40 km meant that the legs were a bit tired this morning. We only had just under 12 miles to get to the water cashe. It was a tough 12 miles uphill on a really hot morning and we were super happy to get to the water about 11 o’clock. We loaded up with water 3 L to carry and 3 L to drink during siesta.

One of the amazing things about the Pacific crest Trail is the trail angels and in particular the ones who leave the water caches. Basically somebody commits a huge amount of time and energy to bring out hundreds of gallons of drinking water into the middle of nowhere and stores them in the shade and provides place for empty containers. There is a donation box and I was very happy to leave something for this amazing service that makes hiking through the hot desert possible and safe. We also experienced some of the generosity of the volunteers yesterday at Scissors Crossing where there was cold drinks in an Esky and plenty of water to fill up after a long carry. The people who do this I generally past hikers who are paying it forward to the current class of 2022. For this we are all truly grateful.

We are currently waiting at the heat of the day. And once again Rockhopper is snoring and fast asleep in the shade, this guy can sleep for Japan.
